All Decked Out
Decking is an ideal addition to any garden; it can help extend living areas of your home and elevate your landscaping. Here is our guide to decking.
When planning decking, the first think to think of is the space. Are you looking for decking at the top or bottom of your garden and are you looking for it to cover a large section of your garden or only a small section? Decking adds levels to your space and can make areas of your garden more usable. Decking is especially useful if you have a garden that is steep as it can help to level out the space.
The next thing to consider is what decking you want to use. You can either go for traditional timber decking in either softwood decking or hardwood decking, or you can go for composite decking which is made from wood. There are pros and cons for each type:
Softwood:
Pros :
Cheap
Easy to install
Colour and finish can easily be changed
Cons:
Requires most maintenance – cleaning and treating with oils for longevity
Weaker than hardwood
Won’t last long- will last longer if it is well maintained.
Decking can be a personal preference. If you have a traditional garden timber may be a better option and harmonise the spaces. While if you are going for a more contemporary look composite decking may be a better option with its smooth finish. It is also important to think about the general look of the space alongside your house. Using Deck boards arranged at right angles will draw the eye toward the garden. Deck boards placed parallel to the house will make the space appear wider.
